The Inca Trail is one of the most famous hikes in the world and the most exciting way to reach Machu Picchu. Walking its ancient stone paths, surrounded by mountains and archaeological sites, is a unique experience. But it requires planning. Here is what you need to know before booking.
Book well in advance
The classic Inca Trail has a strict daily limit of permits regulated by the Peruvian government, and they sell out quickly. We recommend booking at least 5 to 6 months in advance, especially if you wish to travel during the high season (May to September).
Best time to do it
The dry season, from May to October, offers the best conditions. Keep in mind that the Inca Trail closes for the entire month of February for maintenance; if you travel on that date, there are equally beautiful alternative routes, such as Salkantay or Lares.
How difficult is it?
The classic route lasts 4 days and 3 nights, with a highest point at the Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m). No technical experience is required, but moderate physical condition and good prior acclimatization in Cusco are.
What is included and what to bring
Our programs include professional guides, porters, campsites, meals and the entrance to Machu Picchu. You will need to bring:
- Original passport (mandatory for entry)
- Small backpack with layered clothing
- Windbreaker and rain jacket
- Sunscreen, cap and sunglasses
- Comfortable, already broken-in trekking shoes
An important detail
To enter the citadel it is mandatory to present your original passport, the same one with which you made the reservation. Ready to live this legendary journey? At Kuntur Spirit we accompany you every step of the way.
